industry and audience power essay

industry and audience power essay

It is evident that the internet has given consumers much more power than before. The internet has made a lot of things accessible as we can listen to music on apps such as spotify on demand.

The music industry has largely affected the internet. The advantages of this is now is not required to buy music discs as now days you can go on apps and instantly listen to music for free. This would also make music easier to access as a lot of the consumers would have a access to the internet.

Reception theory: blog task

1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?

Preferred reading is a message or ideology/belief that the producers want you to believe.

2)What is the oppositional reading of a media text?

Oppositional reading is when you have a complete different belief to what the producers want you to believe.

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?

The Harry brown trailer depicts young teenagers as violent and trouble makers this would lead the audience to believe that young teenagers are always up to something bad or trying to cause trouble.

4)Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?

Young people would construct an oppositional reading of the trailer as not every young person acts in such violent ways, some do try to get an education.Another reason for why young people would construct and oppositional reading is as not every young person that lives a violent life decided to get into it, as some would be forced due to reasons such as: money problems at home,no parents or family to guide them, friends or simply dragged in by older people in their area or friends.

5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

A preferred reading of this would be that people would believe that they are getting more for less as the burger is bigger and better as the title suggests "A meal disguised as a sandwich." Which is saying that the burger is like a sandwich that is filling.

A negotiated reading of this would be that some consumers would believe that the burger is worth it as you get more for less but on the other hand some consumers would believe that its not worthy as as the descriptions says it screams out unhealthy fast food.

A oppositional reading of this would be that its not worth it as your gaining unnecessary weight and eating food that does benefit your health. It also states "Under scoops of our of our own secret sauce" this would deter some consumers as they may would like to know the ingredients of the sauce as they have an allergic reaction to whatever is in it.

GCSE Media assessment: learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).14/25 good job,Shamsher 4-.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the mark you achieved for each question:

1)0 out of 1  I got confused and thought it was a trick question.
2)1 out of 1
3)1 out of 2  I used the word buys instead of take in.
4)2 out of 2
5)1 out of 2  I didn't explain in depth.
6)1 out of 3  I didn't refer to the credits at the bottom and didn't use media vocabulary.
7)2 out of 2
8)2 out of 4  I didn't make consistent references to the Water aid poster
9)4 out of 8  I needed more valid points.

Where you didn't achieve full marks, write WHY you think you missed out on the extra marks. Use the indicative content suggestions in the mark scheme to help with this.

3) Did you get any media terminology wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision:

4) Identify one of your stronger questions. Why did you do better on this question?
Question 4 because i knew the definition of the word through memory and was easy.
Question 7 as i was able to explain and expand my points with ease.

5) Identify one of your weaker questions. Why did you score lower on this particular question?
Question 6 as i struggled to find points for why is was a film poster.

6) Re-draft your answer to Q9 and type it out in full. Use the mark scheme to identify anticipated content you can add to your response and make sure your typed re-draft is a top-level answer of at least three paragraphs.

The advert producers would use children in their adverts stereotypical connotations of children are weakness and innocence. The effect on the consumer is that the consumer is more likely to donate money to children rather than adults as adults are meant to carry their own weight and be more independent.

The target audience would feel pity on the child and be more likely to donate. This is like a physiological affect on the consumer to donate more.A picture of a helpless child is more likely to reach out to the generosity of the consumer and make them selves feel more proud of the cause they've helped and more likely to do it again, which would lead to reoccurring donations.

Another possible effect is that putting a picture of a child would make the audience believe that the boy comes from a less developed society in the world which lacks basic necessity's and would believe that the money is going for a good cause to help and fund the country so they could clean water and toiletries as the title water aid suggests.

https://youtu.be/AK6Gisj4to4

Camera shots:

1)The opening establishing shot at 0.08 shows that the scene starts outside shops with a young girl entering a car.

2)The medium close up at 0.53 shows a young man in a hoodie pointing a bat at another person this would show the character intends to cause harm to someone.

3)The over the shoulder scene at 2.19 shows the nurse is angry and stressed as the young people are not listening to her commands as they are in panic because there friend has been stabbed.

Camera angles:

1)The unusual perspective at 0.27 shows the camera slowly rising to shows the girl who has been shot and you could also see blood leaking out of her.

2)The low angle scene at 1.07 shows the main protagonist punching someone repeatedly shows he is in a position of power.

Camera movements:

1) The camera movement at 1.16 is hand held as the two men are fighting the camera movement is shaking repeatedly.

2)The camera movement at 0.00 to 0.09 is calm and relaxed on a normal street which would put the audience at ease and set a relaxing mood.

3)The camera movement at 2.30 to 2.43 shows a loose panning as the character tries to escape puts tension and drama.

blog feedback and learner response

Shamsher GCSE Media blog feedback – October 2019
Work expected:
·         Introductory questions
·         Key Concepts film poster analysis
·         Fruit bowl task (Photoshop)
·         Denotation and connotation
Post this in a new blogpost on your Media blog called ‘October 2019 - Blog feedback and Learner Response’ then complete the LR tasks/questions below.
WWW:
·         Some really good analysis using key media terminology! Well done!
·         Interesting posters selected independently which allow you to write good analysis.
EBI:
·         Proofread your work and make sure there are no spelling, punctuation or grammar issues.
·         You must complete work to the best of your ability.
LR:
Complete and improve the following work urgently:
1) Introductory questions
·         Proofread your work and make sure there are no spelling, punctuation or grammar issues.
·         Attempt extension questions.
2) Key Concepts film poster analysis (blog)
·         Language: how do we know it is a film poster? What impact do the key conventions have on the audience?
3) Fruit bowl
·         Proofread your work and make sure there are no spelling, punctuation or grammar issues.

4) Denotation and connotation (blog)
·         For the WaterAid advert, what else is the producer trying to urge the audience to do?
·         For the Top Boy poster, examine the location in the background too – what connotations do we have of this location? Make sure you re-read over your paragraph because at the moment some parts of it don’t make sense.

LR task 2:The impact on the audience would be a sort of sad and sorrow as the men hovering above the shadow seemed to be ghosted/faded which would suggest they could have died in battle.

We can infer this is a film poster as at the bottom is states when the film is coming out and the credits and producers.

LR task 4:In the WaterAid  advert it also tries to urge you to donate a bit of money to help the cause and to make us feel lucky we have toilets and not have to dig our toilets.

The connotation of the background is in a sort of underground garage and since the man is holding a gun could suggest that someone was set up to get killed as a underground garage is not a place you would expect a lot of people to be.

Mise-en-scence stranger thing analysis

Props: The denotations of the Stranger thing opening scene were that there were guns when the young boy was in the shed, a demogorgon  game piece, the boys rucksacks and the phone. The connotations of the demogorgon game piece would suggest that that alien/creature is likely to appear later in the TV series to terrorise the boys.Another connotation is the rucksack as the boys wearing them at all times would show the youth and how young they are.

lighting:The denotations were during the laboratory scene the lights would constantly flash in green, another is every time the shadowed object/creature was near by the light always seemed to have a green shade and in the shed scene when the light bulb became a bright colour. The connotations of the light bulb shinning bright in the shed is that usually light is meant to show a good side and safety in this case its different as the light strikes fear into the audience doing the complete opposite of the stereotypical idea of a bright light being a good sign.

Setting:The denotation of the setting is it is based during the 1980s Indianna. The  connotation of this would be that during the 1980s technology would'nt be as advance or good as today and also seems to be set in a small outskirt town which could also suggest that story is not going to be a story where you switch countries but in sole location.

Denotation and connotations part 2

Image result for top boy advert

In this media TV series advert the denotations are: a gun a young man and part of an
open car door. The connotations of this advert is that the mans face as he aims the gun.
This may suggest that he may have to kill someone he once knew or had respect for. The stereotypical idea of a black man holding a gun would be apart of a gang. The effect on the audience would be that the mans up to no good and apart of an illegal activity, also the title Top boy could suggest that the TV series is based on a gang war violence and the struggle to be the 'Top boy.'

Denotation and connotation

In this water aid advert, the denotations are: a dirt wall with the title saying dig toilets not graves, another denotation is a young boy not smiling. Another denotation is in the back ground you can see sand and a tree and some sort of thatch/wooden hut all blurred out.The connotations of the young boys facial expression maybe that he is sad as he does not seem to be smiling. The connotation of the dirt wall behind him may suggest that the boy is living in poverty. The title dig toilets not graves could link back to why the boy may not seem so happy as he may have had to dig graves for is family or someone he knew, the title also suggest that where they young boy lives they do not have proper toiletry which would link back to him living in poverty. The producers wants to convey to their target audience that they should not be digging their own graves but give digging their own toilets.

Fruit bowl task

The colour palette I used was the vibrant colour pad. I used this pad as it creates a bright and radiant effect on the viewer. I also tried to mixed bright colours with dark so the lighter colours would stand out more.

GCSE Media key concepts

language:
The silhouette of the solider holding a gun suggest that this is an action/war film. The men above silhouette are in an army uniform and hovering above the solider silhouette suggesting that may have died in battle and watching over the fellow friend/solider.The silhouette is holding a world war 2 rifle (M1 garand)this would also suggest that the film is based in world war 2 era.

Audience:

The gun and war like imagery would suggest the films is for people over the age of 15 or people who have an interest in war films. This is more likely to attract a male audience rather than a female.

Industry:

The production companies for Saving private Ryan are paramount pictures, Amblin entertainment, Dreamwork pictures and mutual film company.

Representation:

The film has a stereotypical image of men going out to fight battles and being the brave people who go out and fight. The image labels these men as some sort of war heroes or well respected high ranking soldiers.
